How to Convert Word to PDF on Phone (Android and iPhone)

By SEOAnalytics Lab · Updated · 4 min read

You wrote a resume, an assignment or a letter in Word, and now you need to send it as a PDF, but you only have your phone. You do not have to install an app or find a computer. You can convert a Word file to PDF in your phone browser in under a minute.

This guide shows the steps for Android phones and iPhones, how to keep the layout the same and what to do if something looks different.

Step-by-step: convert Word to PDF on your phone

  • Step 1: Open the converter. Open the Word to PDF converter in Chrome, Safari or any other browser on your phone.
  • Step 2: Choose your file. Tap Choose Word file and pick your document from your phone storage, downloads, Google Drive or iCloud. DOC, DOCX, ODT and RTF files up to 25 MB are accepted.
  • Step 3: Convert. Check the file name and size, then tap Convert to PDF. It usually takes a few seconds.
  • Step 4: Download. Tap Download PDF. The file is saved to your downloads folder, where you can open, share or attach it.
  • Step 5: Check the result. Open the PDF and look at the first page, a page with a table or image and the last page before you send it.

On Android

After you download the PDF, open the Files or Downloads app on your phone and you will find it there. Tap the file to open it, or use the share button to send it by email or a chat app.

On iPhone

In Safari, the downloaded PDF is saved in the Files app, in the Downloads folder. You can open it from the download icon in Safari, and use the share button to send it or save it to iCloud.

Is it safe to convert a document online?

A Word document cannot be converted inside a phone browser, so the file is sent over a secure connection to our conversion server. The server creates the PDF, sends it back and deletes your file. We do not keep a copy of your document.

If a document is extremely confidential, convert it with the software on your own computer instead.

Tips for a good result

  • Use common fonts. Fonts that are not on the conversion server are replaced, which can change line breaks. Arial, Times New Roman and Calibri are the safest.
  • Save as DOCX. A modern DOCX file converts more reliably than an old DOC file.
  • Finish your edits first. Accept or reject tracked changes, so the PDF shows the final text.
  • Keep images reasonable. Very large pictures make a large PDF. Compress them first with the Image Compressor.

Common problems and fixes

  • The fonts look different. Switch to a common font in Word and convert again.
  • The conversion fails. A password-protected or damaged file cannot be converted. Remove the password and save a fresh copy. If you see a message about too many conversions, wait a few minutes.
  • The PDF is very large. Compress the images in the document, then convert it again.
  • I cannot find the downloaded PDF. Open the Downloads folder in your Files app, or check the download list in your browser.
